Los Angeles once used 96 million plastic balls to fight drought, creating a hidden cost

In an innovative effort to curb evaporation, Los Angeles has deployed millions of shade balls across its reservoir. These floating balls serve a dual purpose: they prevent water loss and protect drinking supplies from dangerous chemical reactions caused by sunlight. Even though creating these balls involved significant water use, they take up to two and a half years to offset that consumption.
