Family of woman killed by US immigration agent sues Trump administration

WASHINGTON — The family of Renee Good, an unarmed U.S. citizen shot dead by an immigration agent during a sweeping federal crackdown, sued President Donald Trump's administration on Thursday, alleging wrongful death and civil rights violations. Good, 37, was killed in Minneapolis on January 7 when an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fired three shots into her car during Operation Metro Surge, the administration's mass deployment in Minnesota. Her family filed two lawsuits in federal court. One names the United States and seeks damages under the Federal Tort Claims Act, alleging wrongful death, negligence and other misconduct. The second names the killer, Jonathan Ross, along with senior Trump administration officials including then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller. Both Trump officials baselessly accused Good of terrorism, with Noem falsely claiming in a press conference that the victim had "attempted to run a law enforcement officer over." The second lawsuit alleges a conspiracy to violate civil rights under prov

Trump says Iran may be linked to FlyDubai copilot who tried to crash Israel-bound jet

JERUSALEM — President Donald Trump said Thursday that Iran may be linked to the FlyDubai copilot who tried to crash an Israel-bound plane as investigators worked to determine why the copilot stabbed the flight's captain, causing the plane to plummet before others on board landed it in Saudi Arabia. Trump was asked by reporters at the White House whether he had been briefed about any links between the pilot behind the attack and Tehran. He said, “We’re working on it right now.” “I would say the answer, based on what I’m hearing, is yes, but we’re working on it right now,” Trump said. He did not offer details. Asked if the U.S. would retaliate against Tehran if it was behind the attack, Trump said, “Oh they’ll be hit, very hard, don’t worry.” “You just ask them,” he added. “They know what happened. They’ll be hit very hard.” Passengers got into cockpit to take control of jet Passengers on the FlyDubai plane — which was carrying 174 people, mostly Israelis, from the United Arab Emirates to Tel Aviv — have described how the bloodied Indian captain managed

Why a copilot attacked the captain of an Israel-bound flight remains unknown

JERUSALEM — Investigators worked Thursday to determine why an Omani pilot stabbed the captain of a flight to Israel, causing the plane to plummet dangerously before others on board landed it in Saudi Arabia. Passengers on the FlyDubai plane — which was carrying 174 people, mostly Israelis, from the United Arab Emirates to Tel Aviv — have described how the bloodied Indian captain managed to open the cockpit door to let them in before they grappled with the copilot and stabilized a descent so sharp that the plane’s rudder was torn away. “We felt helpless, suspended in midair, and I didn’t know who to turn to. But it was all instinct to survive,” Asaf Rajuan, who was among those who intervened, said in a statement shared by Israel’s presidency. A regional official briefed on the investigation said the suspect, an Omani citizen, was under arrest and confirmed that Saudi authorities were working with countries, including Israel, to try to determine a motive. He said the UAE, the United States and Oman also were involved. “All possible scenarios, from terrorism to mental diso

Cornell and Burning Sun: What's behind the comparisons?

SEATTLE — The sexual assault allegations involving seven current and former Cornell University students are drawing comparisons to Korea’s Burning Sun scandal, with parallels focusing on private group chats, male group dynamics and questions of institutional accountability. The Cornell case centers on allegations that a female student was drugged and sexually assaulted by multiple members of the Chi Phi fraternity in October 2024. A civil lawsuit filed last month names seven current and former students, including Winston Lee, whose ties to Korea have drawn particular attention in Korean and Korean American online communities. Burning Sun erupted in 2019 as one of Korea’s most notorious scandals in recent years, growing from allegations surrounding a Seoul nightclub into a sprawling case involving prostitution, sexual violence, illegally filmed and shared sexual videos, gambling and allegations of police corruption. Min Joo Lee, an assistant professor of Asian studies at Occidental College whose research includes gender and sexuality in South Korea, told The Korea Times that there

US Supreme Court to review indefinite immigrant detention

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Supreme Court said Thursday it will decide whether President Donald Trump's administration can deny immigrants facing deportation the chance to seek release on bond, in the latest major challenge to his hardline immigration agenda. The policy, introduced after Trump returned to office last year, allows authorities to keep some immigrants detained throughout removal proceedings — potentially for years — even if they have lived in the United States for decades. Previous administrations, including Trump's first, generally allowed such detainees to ask an immigration judge for release while their cases were decided, provided they were not considered dangerous or likely to flee. The administration argues that a 1996 immigration law requires mandatory detention for people who entered the country illegally, regardless of how long ago they arrived. Immigrant advocates say that provision was intended chiefly for people stopped at or near the border and that long-term residents arrested inside the country should remain eligible for bond hearings.
